Elmedia Player By Eltima Software

Elmedia Player is a flash and media player that comes in both a free version and a paid version. Using the built in web browser you can download videos from such websites as YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, Metacafe, and lots more. If you happen to be surfing the web with your favorite web browser, you can import a link to Elmedia player that allows you to open the video from your favorite browser into Elmedia Player. This convenient player supports playback of FLV, SWF, XAP (Silverlight), RM and RV (Real), AVI, MOV, MP4, and many other formats.
With Elmedia Player Pro, you can take it one step further and download videos for later viewing. Elmedia Player Pro is even capable of downloading some of the more difficult videos that other flash videos importers can’t or are unable to download.
Elmeida Player Pro also acts as an organizer of the videos you downloaded or imported. You can manage your downloaded videos into playlists.
Elmedia Player Pro has become my new choice for a downloader of flash video content. I have found it even downloads video from Vevo accounts on Youtube. Other players I have used on Vevo accounts typically are unable to download the video, not Elmedia Player Pro, it downloads the video every time.

Pros of the Elmedia software
  • Good Organizer of Videos
  • Downloads Videos Other Players Can’t
  • Ability to integrate ElMedia with a web browser with a link in a browser to send the video to Elmedia
Cons of the Elmedia software
  • Difficult to import existing video into Elmedia already on the computer but was not downloaded by Elmedia Player Pro
  • For the faint of heart finding the right file to download in the information provided can be a headache. For beginners or someone not familiar with what to look for I can see that it could be frustrating
  • No integration with iTunes - you can’t export your playlist into iTunes.
Elmedia Player is free. If you would like to download videos then you need Elmedia Player Pro which is $19.95. Both versions can be downloaded at http://mac.eltima.com/media-player.html

Overall the Software is my new player / downloader of choice. Of course once Youtube becomes smart again and locks even Elmedia out from downloading content, I’ll be looking for a new upgrade or downloader.

UPDATE 5/13/2011 - I originally reported as a con that it was difficult to import movies into Elmedia Player that were downloaded by another program. Since that time I have been able to drag & drop as well as use the “add to library feature.” You can import your existing videos and use Elmedia Player as a organizer of all your videos.
